City Setúbal

The Roman Setúbal (1th - 4th centuries A.C.) was an important industrial town, connected with fish-salting, served by a vast structure along both sides of the river Sado, including Troia. During 1580, Setúbal made common cause with D. António, Prior of Crato, being submitted by Duke of Alba's troops. Filipe II visited the borough two years later and ordered the building of St Philip's fortress. The great economical and social development in the 19th century makes this borough one of the most important commercial and industrial centres in the country, at such a point that it becomes a town in 1860. During the time following, the town's growth never stops. In 1926, it becomes the district's capital.
