Celebrations in January.

Sofie Cullberg & Hanna Westerholm 2008-05-01

In this section you'll be able to read about various festivities in Sweden. This article addresses the month of January.

1/1 New Years Day.
New Years Day is the first day of the year, it’s the day after New Years Eve.
When you celebrate the new years is coming.
So on this day every year people are tired and have a terrible hangover, and usually they watch the ski jump on the TV and sleeps in the couch.

6/1 12th night the eve of epiphany.
It was the birth of Christ's baptism.
If you’re not a believer of God, this day isn’t a special day.
So if you’re a believer you’re going to the church that day.

13/1 20 days after Christmas eve…
..we have another celebration when we’re dancing
the Christmas out. In Swedish we call it tjugondag knut.
It’s most for the children it’s like a birthday for them
when you have fun, pottering and have a coffee, for the children
that means lemonade and a bun.

Last but not least we have 28/1
It’s our king’s names day, Karl.
It’s a flag day, the same as New Years Day.
The buses are flagging too.

So enjoy our Swedish traditions.

+ Sofie´s birthday is the 17th of January. Then she flags in her room.
