Oviedo in Asturias

Chema Robla 2008-05-01

Oviedo is the capital of Asturias. The typical dish in Asturias is “fabada” (beans) and its typical drink is “sidra” (cider). Oviedo is surrounded by mountains in mainland Asturias, and it doesn’t have a beach. The nearest beach is 20 Km. from Oviedo in a village called Luanco.

In my opinion, the nicest beaches in Asturias are near Llanes, a cosy village on the east coast of Asturias.
The second main city in our region is Gijón, 25 Km. from Oviedo. It has a beach but I don’t like it that much.
The main festivities in our region are San Mateo, Carnival and the “amagüestu” (you can read the article about it in the food section)
San Mateo is the main festivity in Oviedo (21st September). The last week of February we have Carnival and in November we celebrate the “amagüestu”.
