Political Parties in Portugal

Carlos Bogas 2008-05-01

In Portugal we have several political parties. In government right now is the Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrata - PSD) that made an alliance with another party called People’s Party (Partido Popular – CDS/PP). These two oppose the Socialist Party (Partido Socialista – PS), the Communist Party (Partido Comunista – PCP), the Green Party (Partido Ecologista “Os Verdes”), and the Left Wing Party (Bloco de Esquerda).

Nevertheless, there are other parties but they didn’t elect any of its members, for example, Movement of the Earth Party (Movimento O Partido da Terra); Liberal Party (Partido Liberal); People Democratic Union, Revolutionary Left Party (União Democrática Popular); New Democracy Party (Nova Democracia); Humanist Party (Partido Humanista); National Renewal Party (Partido Nacional Renovador); Portuguese Workers Communist Party (Partido Comunista dos Trabalhadores Portugueses). These are the political forces that fight for the Portuguese people.
