On the 1st of January 1999 Portugal, together with other 10 State-members of the European Union (Belgium, Germany, Spain, Franca, Italy, Luxemburg, Holland Austria, Finland and Ireland), adopted the Euro, in a first phase simultaneous with the Escudo. The Euro started being used on the 1st of January 2002. At to the end of the first semester of 2002 the Escudo was removed only euro remained.
