My favourite players are Boris Becker, from Germany and Pete Sampras, from the United States. But these players stopped playing three years ago. Nowadays tennis lost most of its value and importance in the sports world and today’s favourite sports are football, basketball and Formula 1. The only player I know presently is Andrei Aggasi.
I had my first experience playing tennis eight years ago. After a while I lost interest because every time the ball hit the net I started to be angry and the last time I played I broke my racket. I remember a game six years ago, I think it was the world championship final in Hanover, Germany, a match between tennis players Pete Sampras and Boris Becker. This game, I think, was played for about 4 or 5 hours and it was the most exciting game I’ve ever seen. The winner of this match was Sampras but in my opinion he didn’t deserve to win the world championship because Becker was a better player than him.
<B>Here in Portugal we have a very important tennis competition: the Estoril Open.</B> This year it will be its 15th edition and it will take place between April 12 and 18. A tournament full of action with great players like Rainer Schuettler, who reached the final of the 2003 Australian Open; Nikolay Davydenko, Marat Safin, and Goran Ivanisevic (who returned this year to the tennis circuit after a shoulder injury), from Russia; the talented teenagers Richard Gasquet (France) and Rafael Nadal (Spain); Agustin Calleri and Gaston Gaudio from Argentina, and Filippo Volandri, from Italy. In the women's draw, two-time champion Magui Serna, from Spain; the 1999 winner, Katarina Srebotnik, from Slovenia; Alicia Molik from Australia, and Emmanuelle Gagliardi from Sweden are just a few.
This is in fact a big event in the Portuguese sports history.
