To Be Portuguese

Ana Colaco 2008-05-01

Usually we Portuguese are average height and weight, brownish, with dark brown eyes and hair. We’re a friendly people, curious, brave, proud, hard-working, romantic, emotional and hospitable.

Our language comes from the old latin, a roman heritage, and it has unique words that can’t be translated, for example, Saudade.
We Portuguese were once a glorious people in victories and discoveries; our ancestors were brave and fearless men who conquered precious territories by sea and land. Pedro Alves Cabral discovered Brazil and Vasco da Gama discovered the sea way to India.
Here in Portugal we have many sunny days and our climate is temperate by the Mediterranean. Our main economical activities are fishing, agriculture and tourism. We have a very rich gastronomy with typical meals like “Cozido ā Portuguesa”, “Carne de Porco Alentejana”, “Feijoada”, “Bacalhau”, among others. Portugal's traditional musics are Fado and folklore. Our political regime is a Democracy and the Head of State is the President Jorge Sampaio.
In Portugal we have many well-known people, working in different areas. In television we have Herman José (talk-show), Figo and Eusébio (football) and in music we have Marisa (Fado) and David Fonseca (Pop-Rock).
This year Portugal will receive the Euro 2004, a sports event that will bring us some of the best soccer European teams as well as its followers, people of different languages and customs.
