Volleyball was created in the year of 1895 by the American William C. Morgan, director of physical education of the Christian Association of Young men in Massachusetts, United States of America. The original name of the new sport was minonette.

The first ball used in volleyball was very heavy. Volleyball is a new game that was practised usually in a gym or outdoors. The first volleyball block had the following measures: length – 15,35m; width – 7,625m. The net had the height of 1,68 m. The ball was made of rubber covered with leather.
In Portugal, volleyball was introduced by the North American troops that were parked at the island of Azores during the first Great War. Engineer António Cavaco had a preponderant role in Universities to introduce this modality.
The first club to be officially adopted was Campolide Athletic Club and the first official tournament was organized in Lisbon in 1939.
Nowadays volleyball is very famous and in schools we usually have several tournaments where we invite other schools to play in it. We enjoy playing it and win prizes also.
