Young in Europe - eTwinning project Welcome to IES Lomo de la HerraduraIES Lomo de la Herradura is in Telde, Gran Canaria (Spain). We are two groups of 4th Compulsory Secondary Education (A and B), there are thirty-two students in total. We are going to describe briefly some places you can find in our high school. LaboratoriesFirst of all, we will write about our two laboratories at our high school. There are a Biology and a Chemistry laboratory, they’re in the main floor. They have some large marble boards with sinks on each one and stools. You can find like five closets in each one with chemical elements and a large glass showcase with laboratory equipment. We do experiments when we have Biology or Physics and Chemistry class with our teacher. It is a special place for us because we have spent good moments in the lab with our teachers, they are so funny and kind! School gardenWe also grow a school garden, it is situated in the playground above the sports field where you can grow different types of fruit, vegetables or whatever you want. The students from the Special Education Classroom work and a teacher is in charge of keeping the garden healthy with the necessary care and watering them. You can find: lettuce, tomato, potatoes, onion, among others... Also trees and plants of different types and shapes. You can see Jose Luis over there, it is our special gardener. Jose Luis is a Gran Canaria giant lizard (Gallotia Stehlini), you can find this species of lizard only in our island and it is very usual to find them in La Herradura.
Creative roomAnother special place is our Creative Room. It is an open worksplace where everyone make projects. It has some grey couches and a big screen for presentations or educational speeches, it also has many big tables with plenty of chairs for creative works, like drawing or painting. By the way, it is located at the middle of the high school, on the first floor, and to go there you have to go through a patio with some big plants and beautiful natural light, in addition its walls are full of other creative works, such as paintings made by other kids or handicraft.
CanteenOur canteen or cafeteria is very good, it is located in a corner near the playground. Inside it has two tables and six chairs for those who want to sit down to have breakfast, although most take their breakfast to the playground. It has all kind of sandwiches, croissants and drinks. Yummy!
SportsMorever, there is a sports pavilion where we have Physical Education and we also play different sports and games. We try to improve our physical condition, resistance, force and speed.
There you can find balls, mats, golf sticks, skates, dumbbells, etc. LibraryThe library is quite old, you can study and read some books in your free time or during break time. There are some interesting books you can borrow and read them at home. We have a ‘equality corner’ which is violet and there you can read book written by women. Inside the library there is a little room: the school radio, there we record podcasts or interviews we do to our guests.
You cannot eat inside the library and sometimes there are events and guests. The library of the school in one word is very enjoyable. Special educationLast but not least, we have a Special Education Classroom. There, students with special needs do lots of creative and passionate activities and they have three amazing teachers.
For example: they have a project where they make paper out of recycled materials, they sell handicraft things they have made with their own hands! Furthermore, those students usually take care of the school garden and they usually do activities related to the library decoration. This class is really special for several reasons: the students there are really creative and they are always collaborating with other classmates in different activities.
